OMA has added three new structures to this historic industrial site: a flat, mirror-clad space housing a cinema; a 24-carat gold-plated building serving as a temporary exhibition space; a ten-storey tower to be used as a gallery; and a tower currently under construction.

Its precisely calibrated architectural language completely subverts the previous building's appearance: far from being merely eye-catching, even on overcast days this gold-plated structure bathes the entire complex in a warm glow.

The new CaixaForum Cultural Centre in Seville endeavours to simultaneously address two critical issues in interventions involving existing structures: architectural strategies within given constraints and the requisite visibility.

The architects sought to emphasise the spaces of the exhibition galleries and auditorium, allowing their height and dimensions to avoid conflict with the existing concrete structure through a self-supporting enclosure. These functional spaces are situated underground, thereby regulating the building's entrance sequence and circulation routes.
