Copper foam is a key material for solid-state batteries

2024-06-24

Metal foamis a new type of multifunctional Material with the appearance of "foam" or "honeycomb", which is mainly made of polyurethane (PU) soft foam as a substrate, and prepared by pretreatment, chemical deposition, electrodeposition and heat treatment.
Among them, copper foam, as a three-dimensional porous, uNiformly interconnected foam metal material, is expected to become the negative electrode collector of semi-solid state/solid state lithium battery due to its low preparation cost, good electrical conductivity, inhibit the growth of dendrites, and alleviate the volume change of electrodes during charging and discharging.
The core process of its manufacturing is electroplating, and its electroplating process includes substrate metallization, plating thickening, plating antioxidant, etc. The quality and cost of its plating are closely related to the plating process, plating equipment, and special chemicals.

Advantages of copper foam as anode collector material:
1. High safety:
No burrs will be produced when piercing to avoid internal short circuit.
2. Cost reduction, weight reduction, high energy density:
The amount of copper used is about 1/7 of the traditional copper foil.
3. Excellent overcharging performance:
    Expected to reach 7-10C.
4. Can realize lithium metal anode:
Copper foam collector can inhibit the growth of dendrites, alleviate the volume change of the electrode in the process of charging and discharging, and can be improved through the lithophilicity of the process of composite lithium metal electrodes in order to achieve the integration of the anode and the collector, which is conducive to the realization of the application of lithium metal negative electrode to accelerate the industrialization of semisolid/solid-state batteries.

Wide market prospects: lightweight features targeting the trillion-dollar market of low-altitude economy
As a structural material, copper foam has the characteristics of light weight and high specific strength. Compared with the traditional 6-micron electrolytic copper foil and composite copper foil, it can significantly reduce the weight of the battery and improve the energy density of the battery, which is expected to become the core material for the lightweighting of the low-altitude economy, and provide important support for the development of the low-altitude economy.
